Si Hui says:

I have been an Earthlinker throughout my university life and I've never regretted joining this CCA. It has been great knowing that there are so many enthusiasts out there who are concerned about the environment and doing their best to protect it.

This is my first time travelling to Vietnam, as well as, on a YEP trip. So, I hope that I will get to know more about this country - its culture, environmental and economy etc by the end of this trip. More importantly, I want to challenge myself in adapting to a villager's lifestyle so that I can remind myself not to take things for granted. May Ecoventure 2010 be a great success and that all the participants enjoy this upcoming trip!

Yuhau says:

I can be quite talkative (people always think that…) but don’t be surprised when you find me quiet and at a corner… I can be quite boring too…  I am a rather simple person who loves to immerse myself in the beauty of Mother Nature (but I do hate mosquitoes…) and hope to do my part in conserving the wonderful gifts of nature given to us.

Joining EcoVenture 2010 is not only the beginning of my graduation trip but also a journey to expand my horizon, widen my exposure to a path less travelled by those of us in the urban area. This will be a trip in which we and people we going to meet in Vietnam share and learn from each other, enriching our knowledge in all aspects.

I do believe that this trip would leave another impactful and memorable experience in us to greater appreciate and cherish what we have. We are blessed!

And do hope to meet and forge great friendships with everyone! ^_^

Jun Wei says:

I am finally finishing my studies and can play for a while. This is my second time on an OCIP trip again and I hope to make it a fun and enjoyable trip for everyone and myself. :D I am currently busy with many trips... cycling to Malaysia, Vietnam OCIP, and had to turn down a free trip to Kinabula and Batam. :( I am still looking forward to the many more trips to come. :D

I enjoy playing, playing sports, planning stuff, reading and meditation! I am currently busy with teaching tuition and learning guitar, my new-found hobby!

I took this picture during my backpacking trip in 2007. I had no idea what the mountain is called - I made it up to the summit on my own. Wonderful view from there!

Zheng Yu says:

Hey there, my name can be interpreted as “steamed fish”. But calling me Zheng Yu or fish is much more preferred and appreciated. Currently, I am a MSE year 2 student who holds quite a low profile in the course. I can be dull, cold, soft-spoken and unresponsive. However, I can be also easy-going, fun-loving and passionate. Quite a confusing person I am, so don't be surprise or shocked if you see the other side of me.

The reason why I participate in Ecoventure is simple - to contribute to the society, not only Singapore but also other parts of the world. Being able to live in this comfortable society, I would like to share my joy with others who may not be able to enjoy this. The thing I wish to take back from the trip is pictures of smiles and happy memories. Let's hold our hands together to make this trip successful and enjoy every bit of it.

Hong Yuen says:

I am a happy-go-lucky person. I love nature and I am glad that I can join this wonderful trip.
I hope we can help the people there learn something about what they can do together for our Mother Earth and also teach the villagers there some basic English so that they can communicate with more people from all around the world. I also hope that everyone in our group will be happy and learn more about the world and ourselves after the trip. :)

Despite having a job attachment in an MNC company, I’m still behaving like a kid....cheerful, playful n BLUR! Yet, you can only discover these personalities when I’m a close friend of yours. Otherwise, you might think I am a cool and quiet girl. =P

I hope to develop multi-tasking skills, expand my social circle and enjoy the fun of working in a team. Together we explore, we venture and the best part of it all, we have FUN!

Kenneth says:

I guess I embarked on this trip with an uncertain heart; not just uncertain of what the future would hold, but also uncertain of my present state of mind; why I’m here and why I want to go.

Nonetheless, I do have an inkling of what I intend to achieve, only that it’s as vague as outlines of a distant land shrouded in mist. Perhaps, I would like to see Vietnam in a different light; having been there as a tourist I would like to see it from a new perspective, not of a pleasure-seeking tourist but rather a rural native in this tropical forest city.

It is also to make new friends! And also to forge stronger ties with existing ones. The trip can be seen as analogous to the famous American road trip. I think it’s a great way to bond with people you already know at a deeper level, after all, friendship is like tea leaves; you do not know how strong they are until you put them in hot water. It is also to break new grounds and forge new friendships; for what’s life without company!

Perhaps, it is also a trip for me to understand hardships of the world at large. After all, Singapore is very much a citadel; a fortress of comfort and safety shielded away from the harsher realities out there. I hope the trip would be an eye opener for me to have greater insights of what rural life entails, and in doing so I might learn to appreciate better the fortunes that I have taken for granted.

Cai Ping says:

The country that we are going to, Vietnam, is a place that I love and appreciate. Therefore, it is also the country that I have visited the most besides Malaysia, of course. To me, the Vietnamese people are a group of honest, truthful and friendly people. I personally think that they possess the qualities that many Singaporeans lack… Try interacting with some of them and you will know what I mean.

While the goals of our trip may be to improve the lives of the people of Gia Bac, I truly believe that in reality, this trip is actually helping us to grow as a person. Thus, rather than sympathize, it will be good for us to empathize with them instead. It’s always good to constantly remind ourselves that the people there might actually be happier than us in many ways.

While we do not have the power to change their lives, we do have the opportunity to share with the children what we know. Let’s all embrace this humbling experience.

Yung Lin says:

Hey hey, you can call me Shirley. =) I'm a year 3 Environmental Engineering student, now currently doing IA. I can be kind of a chatter box when you get to know me and if our frequency happens to match... For more information about me, please come approach me personally and you might discover wonders! (just kidding ;P)

Going to Vietnam is my dream come true! But on top of that, I really hope to be able to inspire some of the kids out there to study hard because no matter what your background is, success lies in your own hands! At the same, I hope to foster a good relationship with my team members and to widen my social network!

Margie says:

I love to travel and during my school life, I go travelling all the time.  Usually, final year students will go on a relaxing graduation trip but I chose something which is different from my friends.  This is the first time I am going on an overseas volunteer project and it is also the first time I'm volunteering for something as well.

Spending my holidays on Ecoventure 2010 is a great chance for me as a learning journey in my life.  It is a very meaningful trip to me.  I hope that I can do great job in this trip.

I am in the teaching group with Kenneth, Cai Ping, Yan Xin and Shirley.  We have planned many activities to engage the Vietnamese students and I feel so excited about learning and playing with the kids in Gia Bac Village.

Shi Ting says:

(The one on the left)

In 2008 when I celebrated my 21st birthday, in order to challenge myself, I went on my first “solo” backpack trip to Vietnam. I could feel my heart beating as I stood in front of the boarding gate, the emotions running through me ranging from fear to excitement to uncertainty.

Now 2 years later, I am on my way to Vietnam again. The same mixed feelings come again although the purpose and the situation are totally different this time round. Will we be able to overcome every unexpected obstacle calmly and positively in order to make this event become the most memorable trip in our life? We need some sort of faith to bind us together but can we build this kind of relationship during the process?

I recall my original intention to join Ecoventure and to become the team’s vice-chairperson was to assist my best friend, Wan Ying. She is an energetic girl with many capabilities and we share the same belief in many things.

As we began our planning, I could sense the great chemistry amongst the members of the committee. Mingling with the participants also made me feel that this is an excellent platform to gather people from different background but who have a common green attitude towards environmental issues. While the preparation work is tedious, the support from our participants really touched me!

As the group leader of the reporter team, we are keen to catch up with the authentic beauty of Vietnam and to make our precious memories tangible! We will try our best to record all that we can to make this trip an unforgettable and fruitful one!

Kang Hua says:

(The one on the left)

For me, this trip is one of many “firsts”. It is the first time I’m going on a trip with the school or friends for that matter. It is the first time I’m going away from Singapore for more than a week. It is the first time I’m visiting Vietnam. It is the first time I’m going on YEP. And these are not the last. Naturally, the unknown brings about a sense of uncertainty and fear and more so for a worrier like me.

However, there is a first time for everything. I wondered about what would happen if I chose not to be a part of this trip and I realised I would probably miss out on many valuable experiences. Living in Singapore and staying for the most part of my life within the boundaries of its shores, there are many things out there for me to learn and discover. I hope that I will be able to broaden my perspectives with this trip as there are some things which need to be experienced before one can better understand them. At the same time, I hope to contribute what I can to make this trip a fruitful one, both for us and those in Vietnam. The things we are able to do may be small but I hope that we will still be able to make a difference, at least to somebody and be glad that we did.

Wai Fun says:

I always want to do something to help the environment but other than using my own bag instead of taking an extra plastic bag and using my own tupperware when I take-away, I don’t know what else I can do. Therefore, thank you to Ecoventure, for letting me to obtain  knowledge related to the green lifestyle (and of course, solid waste management! LOL). I hope that after this trip, we’ll still continue to treat the Earth better!
